As according to Wing  Cmdr.  Sharad chaturwedi,”All good things must come to an end”, finally, the so-called IAYM Programme, comes to an end. But the memories and experiences it cherished, will never end in the MSF books, and in the minds of the 70 Students, the members of MSF, especially the mentors, the associates, and the assistants.
The Programme provided a lot more than its expectations. The programme’s main motive was to instill the spirit of Mathematics, the different way of learning things with an unusual learning environment, however it generated a lot more. The students came with expectations of learning things, as it meant to be in a normal school or institute, but the environment which they recieved here, was completely out of the box. They learned how things should be learned, they learned to devise their own techniques and procedures for understanding things. The programme changed the level and way of thinking of every student who came here. The presentations which took place the final day were Chandrayaan(School group), the Error Correction(College), the Circumference Of the Earth, and Search Engine(Eagle 1 Group).
Each of the project mentioned above, brought new and innovative algorithms, techniques, and steps to solve any kind of problem mentioned above.
The Chandrayaan School group showed their experiment of the projectile motion by inventing their launch pads and their original and unique technique of measuring range, height, angle, gravity, air drag etc. of the projectile. They showed that to do some new, innovative and brilliant, age do not matter. They came up with their skit of Maths communication project on Quadratic equations. Infact their use of knowledge with MATHEMATICA was impressive.
Moving on to Error Correction, this group came up with their own algorithm and methods of determining and correcting errors in a transmitted message.
The circumference Group came up with their method of measuring the circumference of earth, using the shadows measurement of any object at any two places. I will not move into the technicalities of the project. Overall, their show was very good.
Last, but not the least, their was Search Engine’s Eagle 1. The main purpose of the project was to just devise some simple techniques for building a search engine for images. The image searching was done using CBIR technique i.e. Content Based Image Retrieval System. The procedure included many steps like wavelet transformations, average & differencing, cluster formations etc.
All the presentations were awesome and fantastic. The cheer and charm of the occassion cannot be expressed in words, one had to be there to feel it.
In the beginning of the programme, Dr.Agarwal said one thing to all of us and the students,” Even if you do not achieve any milestone in your project, but still you will return with around 71 friends and 14 non-friends. The course of the programme proved his saying, though the achievement was more of a “Sone pe Suhaga” kind, the students’ face showed their happiness when being with friends, whom they did not even know, one month before, “THIS WAS THE MAGIC OF IAYM”.

Finally the departing lecture of Dr. Dinesh Singh was a bonus. He talked about how he just came from Houston that morning, but still, inspite of the tiring flight, he managed to came to the DPS. He was astonished and excited to see the refreshing faces of the students and their mind-blowing presentations. He said that we students of India have the responsibility to give back India his glory in terms of his rich educational heritage. He requested the students to study at any college, any course, home or abroad, but they should come back to India, for making India better.

I want to write more, but lack of time prohibits me from doing this…
Ahh.. We should not forget the beautiful and melodius song sung by Mr. Vijay Kumar jayanti Bhai Solanki(thats his full name) “Jab zero diya mere Bharat ne, Duniya ko tab ginti aayi….”

In the end, My word of in-expressible thanks to Dr. Sanjeev Agarwal, Dr. Amber Habib, Wing Cdr. Sharad Sir, Dr. Saha, Zia Sir, Cyed Sir, Anjani Sir, Jatin Sir, Niteesh Sir,the trio- Charu Mam, Shivani Mam, Manisha Mam, and my friends- Sanad and Sarvesh. AND DPS!!!

The Climax starts…

Bright Students
The Climax

The so-awaited presentations ceremony started on june 26th. The students’ hardwork and their invaluable ideas started to show up. The presentations were so divided, that they could be spread out two days: 26th and 27th of June. There were 11 groups. Every group had prepared one presentation on their main project and one on their Maths Communication.
So Every group has to submit two presentations and two reports for the same mentioned earlier. Though many groups prepared their presentations and reports at the later stage, but still they managed  to response back nicely. Their on-stage performance was perfect.

The presenations which took place that day include groups: Chandrayaan 1, Chandrayaan 2(College Groups), Encryption(College), Encryption(School), Error Correction(School), Jantar Mantar, Search Engine( Eagle 2).

Each group mentioned above came up with a different concept to be explained in their Maths Communication. They used MATLAB, MATHEMATICA, FLASH, MUPAD etc. in their presentations impressively, which is quite difficult to those students, who did not even know about these Softwares a month before. The students were simply brilliant and amzing in teir approach towards the subject. Some came up with a story, some came up with a game, some came up with a quiz and so on in their Maths comm. project to explain different concepts. This shows how Mathematics is linked with everyone and everything in this world.
The day overall was a fantastic one. The whole day many students and some of the faculty clicked as many pictures as they could, as everyone of us knew that, how precious that moment and occasion was. Each one wanted to store these moments for their future.

I think around 2000 or more pictures were clicked on the same day. The programme left the students with cheer in their heart, and at the same time, a fear of leaving their friends on the last day. The students energy level showed their excitement.
This can also be felt by the faces of students-cum-faculty members who were clicking snaps, capturing videos etc.

The day was very special to me, in particular, because I turned 20, the same day… Though I wanted to go home early, that day, still I was very happy to be a part of the occassion that day. I made a lot of friends and this memories which I gathered here will cherish me, in my future life.

The Final day was not over.. it was the second last one…
So, let us move to the final day, Thanks!!!

IAYM continues…

lecture room
The auditorium

Today is 23rd June 2009, the programme has almost reached to its end. The students have almost completed their preparations for their presentations.
Today, there was a small change in the schedule. Instead of the daily lectures of 9:30, students were shown an interesting movie, called ‘Flatland’. The movie was an animated & fantastic story of figures of dimensions. It showed the conflict between dimensions.
The motive behind the story wass ‘The things you cant see, doesn’t means that it do not exist’.

After that there was a  tea break, then there was supposed to be a lecture
by Prof. Sanjay Jain on ‘Origin of Life’ at 10:30, but due to some reasons it was postponed to 11:30. Prof. Jain is a physicist working at the National Physics Laboratory, New Delhi. Prof. Jain talked about the evolution of life on earth, that is the first single-celled organism. He talked about the internal structure and the chemical composition of a cell or a bacterial cell specifically. The lecture was very informative and interesting though it stretched a little lot.

After his lecture, their was the lunch break. From 1:30 students  followed their daily routine…

As the day followed a changed routine, the enthusiasm increased to a lot. Moreover, when the students left to their homes, they shall think, ‘Is there a 4th dimension?’- Flatland

Thanks…

IAYM(Inviting All Young Minds)

IAYM(Inviting All Young Minds), is an initiative and a summer internship programme undertaken by Mathematical Sciences Foundation, a non-profit organization, for the students of college and school level.MSF has been in existence from 1997, though it was formally established in year 2002.

Since then, the foundation have been working for the growth and development of Mathematics in the minds of people of each age-grade. IAYM though started informally in the month of April, it started formally on June 01, 2009, at DPS, R K Puram, New Delhi.

The programme invited students from all over the country. The Foundation recieved over 500 invitations from all over the country, but due to the arrangements possible only for few students. So, only 72 students were selected depending on their academic performance and their recommendations.

36 students from college, 36 students from school have been selected.

The outstation students have been provided with hostel facility. Moreover the students who are selected  will also be provided with the stipend of 5000/-, along with the certificates.

The course of the programme have been divided into five major projects, as listed:

  1. Chandrayaan
  2. Search Engine.
  3. Jantar Mantar
  4. Error Correction.
  5. Encryption.
  6. Circumference of Earth.

Depending on the choice and skills of the students, the projects have been allotted to the students. 12 students are working on each project, 6 from school, 6 from college. The programme has completed over two weeks. And the enthusiasm and excitement of the students is increasing day by day. The students are now enjoying the concept and style of teaching, by their lecturers. The students have felt and realized the meaning of true learning and knowledge earning, they have been shown the techniques and ways of learning things practically.

The summer programme is a great success and will yield positive and great results…..
